A Day at the Suffolk Show: Celebrating Small Businesses and Big Dreams

Yesterday, Mark and I had the pleasure of visiting the Suffolk Show, an event that never fails to showcase the best of British agriculture, small businesses, and local craftsmanship. From the moment we arrived, we were met with warm hospitality at the Scrutton Bland tent, where a much-needed coffee and a delicious bacon roll set us up for the day ahead.

There was no shortage of sights to take in—from impressive livestock displays to captivating demonstrations, we soaked up every moment. The variety of stalls was truly inspiring, with so many talented entrepreneurs proudly selling products they had designed and made themselves. As someone passionate about supporting businesses, seeing their dedication and creativity reminded me why I love what I do.

Of course, no visit to the Suffolk Show would be complete without indulging in a few treats! The brownies were rich and moreish, and I couldn't resist sampling some Norfolk rum—spiced rum is definitely a personal favourite. Even when a few showers made an appearance, a couple of Adnams ales helped brighten the mood.

Beyond the sights, tastes, and atmosphere, what stood out most was the undeniable spirit of small business owners. Their hard work, innovation, and drive are what make events like these so special. While my work focuses on finance, I know that success in business isn’t just about money—it’s about chasing dreams, building something meaningful, and making a lasting impact.

A truly lovely and productive day, filled with great company, fantastic finds, and inspiring conversations. Already looking forward to next year!

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD ITSA): Are You Ready?

Tax reporting is evolving, and if you're a self-employed individual or a landlord, these changes will affect you. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD ITSA) is set to transform how income tax is recorded and submitted to HMRC. But what exactly does this mean, and how can you prepare?

Who Does MTD ITSA Affect?

MTD ITSA applies to:

  • Self-employed individuals and landlords with annual business or property income exceeding £50,000 (from April 2026, with a threshold reduction to £30,000 in 2027).
  • Those who currently submit a Self Assessment tax return for income tax purposes.

If you fall into these categories, it's essential to start preparing for the upcoming changes.

When Do These Changes Take Effect?

  • April 2026 – MTD ITSA applies to those earning £50,000 or more from self-employment or property.
  • April 2027 – The threshold drops to £30,000, bringing more taxpayers into the system.

HMRC has extended the timeline to allow businesses and landlords ample time to transition smoothly.

What You Need to Do

  1. Use MTD-Compliant Software – Instead of submitting annual tax returns, MTD ITSA requires digital record-keeping and quarterly updates via approved software.
  2. Maintain Digital Records – Your income and expenses must be logged electronically.
  3. Prepare Early – Waiting until the last minute may lead to confusion. Start familiarising yourself with MTD-compliant software now.
