Last weekend, I laced up my running shoes for the Larking Gowen Ipswich Half Marathon—my third time tackling this iconic Suffolk race. Joined by Mark Harris and my stepson Jacob Cooper, we set off with high hopes and a healthy dose of nerves. And while the course didn’t get any easier, I’m proud to say I crossed the finish line with my fastest time yet.
The weather wasn't bad —warm, dry but a little windy. Almost 3,000 runners filled the streets, each with their own goal. The atmosphere was electric, from the starting gun to the final stretch, the support from spectators and volunteers was incredible.
This race was hard, by the 16km mark my energy was fading. That final stretch tested every ounce of grit I had. But I kept pushing, knowing I’d already come so far. The thought of that finish line—and the people waiting for me—kept me going.
Crossing the finish line was emotional. Luckily I had family waiting there to congratulate me, my stepdaughter Melody Harris, an audit senior at Larking Gowen and a volunteer on the day, was waiting with my medal in hand.
Despite the struggle, I genuinely enjoyed the race. There’s something addictive about the challenge, the community, and the personal growth that comes with each attempt. I’ve already signed up for next year—and who knows, maybe I’ll shave off even more time.
Yesterday, Mark and I had the pleasure of visiting the Suffolk Show, an event that never fails to showcase the best of British agriculture, small businesses, and local craftsmanship. From the moment we arrived, we were met with warm hospitality at the Scrutton Bland tent, where a much-needed coffee and a delicious bacon roll set us up for the day ahead.
There was no shortage of sights to take in—from impressive livestock displays to captivating demonstrations, we soaked up every moment. The variety of stalls was truly inspiring, with so many talented entrepreneurs proudly selling products they had designed and made themselves. As someone passionate about supporting businesses, seeing their dedication and creativity reminded me why I love what I do.
Of course, no visit to the Suffolk Show would be complete without indulging in a few treats! The brownies were rich and moreish, and I couldn't resist sampling some Norfolk rum—spiced rum is definitely a personal favourite. Even when a few showers made an appearance, a couple of Adnams ales helped brighten the mood.
Beyond the sights, tastes, and atmosphere, what stood out most was the undeniable spirit of small business owners. Their hard work, innovation, and drive are what make events like these so special. While my work focuses on finance, I know that success in business isn’t just about money—it’s about chasing dreams, building something meaningful, and making a lasting impact.
A truly lovely and productive day, filled with great company, fantastic finds, and inspiring conversations. Already looking forward to next year!
